week 11: Genetics - Punnett Squares and Baby Face Lab
This week we are practicing Punnett Squares in order for students to design their own baby face on Wednesday and Thursday. We will also have a quiz over the Vocabulary on Monday (A Day) and Tuesday (B Day) and a quiz over the Punnett Squares on Friday. See below for files:

week 10: Genetics - Heredity and Traits
This week we are going to be talking about heredity and traits in genetics. We are going to be looking at dominant and recessive traits, punnett squares, and then having a Vocabulary Quiz on Friday. Make sure you study for it! It will be over about 20 vocabulary words. Please see below for files. I do not have a digital copy of the guided notes to the intro to punnett squares powerpoint. You will have to get it from me during class.

week 8: simulations, jeopardy powerpoint game, board games
This week will be less on the homework side since the students should be working on completing their essay on time. I will be doing some simulations for Mitosis and Meiosis with Pop-It Beads, Jeopardy Cell Game, and at the end of the week they will have a chance to play the cell board games created by their peers.

week 7: mitosis versus meiosis
This week we are focusing on how Meiosis works in cell division. Then, we will compare the facts learned last week about Mitosis with the facts learned this week about Meiosis through coloring sheets and graphic organizers. At the end of the week we are working on an essay that is copyrighted and thus I cannot publish it on this website. If you are missing any of the pages for the essay then you will have to get them from me in class. See below for the files for this week:

WEEK 6: VARIATION IN ASEXUAL AND SEXUAL REPRODUCTION
This week we are going to be looking at how characteristics of living things are passed on to future generations. We will also be looking at how offspring that result from sexual reproduction (fertilization and meiosis) have greater variation than offspring that result from asexual reproduction (budding and mitosis). REMEMBER: Your Cell Project is due by this Friday: December 6th. Below are the files that we are going to be using this week:

WEEK 5: ONION/CHEEK CELLS AND WEB QUEST ACTIVITY
This week will be a shorter week since we are only meeting on Monday and Tuesday before Thanksgiving break. We will be looking at onion and cheek cells underneath a microscope and then will be doing a web quest looking at plant and animal cells in more depth.

week 4: Animal and plant cell analogies and super heroes
This week we are going to be reviewing for the unit test on Friday by (1) comparing the plant/animal cell organelles to parts of a city, (2) Having them use the organelles to create superheroes, (3) doing memory match (flash cards), and (4) creating a cell cookie.

This week we are looking at the cell theory and different types of organelles (ex: Mitochondria, Nucleus, Cytoplasm, etc.). I am also going to be giving out some handouts for a Cell Project that will be due on December 6th, 2013. I will give my students five different types of projects that they can pick from. Below is all of the files for the week as well as the five different types of projects. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to send me an email at [email protected]. Thanks!

Here are the notes that we used with the above Gangum style Powerpoint. First, you just need to find a karaoke version to the Gangum Style Song. Then, below are the hand/feet motions that we did in order to remember the following Vocabulary:
1. Eukaryote - Contains a Nucleus (put hands over your head because the nucleus is the brain of the cell)
2. Acellular - no cellular structure (wiggle like a glob)
3. Prokaryote - Does not contain a nucleus (shake your hands back and forth like you are saying "no" to something)
4. Heterotroph - They do not make their own food (act like you are eating a cheeseburger)
5. Multicellular - contains multiple cells (pretend like you are catching bubbles in the air)
6. Unicellular - has only one cell ("Unicorn" - put one finger on your forehead like a unicorn)
7. Cilium - "hair like structure" (put your fingers on the side of your face)
8. Pseudopod - "foot like extension" (stomp your foot/move it around)
9. Autotroph - Make their own food (sway like a tree)
10. Flagellum - "tail-like structure" (wiggle like a snake)
